Pak seeks PM’s apology for advert gaffe

Islamabad, January 28: Taking note of the inclusion of the picture of a former Pakistani air chief in a full-page advertisement issued by the women and child development ministry, a spokesman for the Pakistan air force has said prime minister Manmohan Singh should apologise to the people of Pakistan for hurting their feelings.

While ordering an inquiry into the faux pas, two days ahead of Republic Day, the prime minister’s office had apologised to the general public for having included the picture of former Pakistani air chief Tanvir Ahmed in the advertisement.

Tanvir was Pakistan’s air chief from 2006 to 2009. Approached for comments, the spokesman for the Pakistan air force said that the blunder committed by the Indian officials has hurt the feelings of the people of Pakistan more than those of their Indian
counterparts and premier Singh should formally apologise to them as well.

The controversial ad, which had a “consumer connect initiative” tag to mark the day, had the retired Pakistani air chief’s photograph along with those of Singh, Sonia Gandhi, women and child development minister Krishna Tirath, cricketers Virender Sehwag and Kapil Dev and sarod maestro Ustad Amjad Ali Khan and his sons Amaan and Ayaan.
