New Delhi,October 30:The judicial commission that Pakistan wants to send to India to record statements of those involved in the interrogation of Ajmal Kasab – the lone terrorist nabbed alive in the Mumbai 2008 terror attack case – is likely to visit Mumbai soon.
This was indicated in a statement issued by the Interior Ministry about a meeting between the Minister Rehman Malik and Pakistan’s High Commissioner in India, Shahid Malik. According to the statement, the Minister asked Mr. Malik to inform the Indian Government about the planned visit of the judicial commission. However, there was no word on the dates of the visit or who had been nominated to member the commission.
The issue of a judicial commission has been hanging fire for over a year now. Pakistan first mooted the judicial commission after India refused its request to send Kasab to testify in the ATC here since the dossiers sent by New Delhi were inadmissible. As a way out of this stalemate, Pakistan decided to invoke provisions of Chapter XL of Pakistan’s Code of Criminal Procedure which provides for setting up such a commission.
New Delhi agreed to a visit by the judicial commission in March this year at the Home/Interior Secretary-level talks after Islamabad conveyed its readiness, in principle, to entertain a commission from India to Pakistan in connection with the case. This was accepted on the basis of the principle of comity and reciprocity, according to the joint statement issued at the end of the talks.
