Amritsar, September 01: An alert has been sounded as a Pakistani prisoner at the high-security Amritsar Central Jail went “missing” on Tuesday, sending the entire jail administration into a tizzy.
Anyait Khan had completed his jail sentence in February and with his verification okayed by the Pakistan High Commission in Delhi, he was likely to be sent back home.
“He is missing. He cannot go out of the jail as the security is fool-proof here. We have launched a major search operation to trace him,” said Jail Superintendent G S Sidhu, adding that he had suspended three watchmen and a guard for negligence.
Deputy Commissioner K S Pannu has, meanwhile, ordered a probe by a sub-divisional magistrate and an additional commissioner of police. “He may be hiding somewhere in the vast premises of the jail. But an inquiry is on to see if he has escaped, breaking the security cordon. Officials will be punished if investigations found them guilty,” said Pannu.
