Pak court dismisses contempt petition against Gilani

Lahore, June 15: A Pakistani court on Monday dismissed a contempt of court petition filed against Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani for making a statement supporting Asif Ali Zardari’s decision to hold the posts of President and chief of the ruling Pakistan People’s Party.

However, Justice Ijaz Ahmad Chaudhry of the Lahore High Court remarked that Gilani should not have commented on a matter that is sub-judice.

Ghulam Jillani, who filed the petition, withdrew it when the full bench of the High Court headed by Justice Chaudhry ruled that Gilani had not committed contempt of court.

The bench observed that the premier’s statement did not attract contempt of court proceedings as he had expressed his personal views which could not influence the court.

Justices Iftikhar Hussain Chaudhry, Umar Ata Bandial, Iqbal Hameed-ur-Rehman and Ijaz-ul-Ahsan were the other members of the full bench.

Jillani had contended that the Prime Minister’s remarks about Zardari holding dual offices amounted to contempt of court as the same matter is pending before the judiciary.
