Pakistan, it seems, is reluctant to come clean on media reports suggesting that the
United States consistently informed Islamabad about its intended drone strikes in tribal areas from 2007 to
2011.
Foreign Office spokesman Aizaz Chaudhry said he did not want to go into details over the reports of drone
strikes carried out in full awareness of Pakistani Government, but mentioned that everyone was aware of the
present government’s stance on these attacks, Dawn News reports.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had reiterated the country’s stance on drone strikes during his meeting with
President Barack Obama at the White House on Thursday, Chaudhry added.
He said that the Obama administration was also being pressurized to end drone attacks on both the global and
local fronts.
Chaudhry clarified the status of Dr Shakil Afridi, who helped the CIA track down slain Al Qaeda leader Osama
bin Laden from his hideout in Abbottabad, that he had broken the country’s laws and he would not be handed
over to anyone. Rather, his cases would be dealt as per Pakistan’s laws.
