Painting by Churchill up for sale

London, April 18:A rare painting by former British prime minister Winston Churchill while holidaying in France has been put up for auction.

The “Villa on the Nivelle” was drawn after the general election of July 5, 1945 and before the result was announced July 26, The Daily Telegraph reported.

Churchill went with his wife Clementine to the Basque region of France. He was reportedly persuaded to paint the art work by the wife of the British consul in Bordeaux.

A rare photograph shows the then prime minister in the middle of painting the work.

It will be sold at Christie’s in London May 26 and is expected to fetch up to 300,000 pounds.

Churchill took up painting at the late age of 40.

In 2007, a painting of Churchill’s home, “Chartwell Landscape with Sheep”, was sold for a record one million pounds, the Telegraph said.
