P Chidambaram slams Lalit Modi, wants government’s letters to UK chancellor released

After he tweeted that the Indian government should release the letters sent to the UK chancellor regarding Lalit Modi’s case, P Chidambaram spoke to the media on the issue.

Chidambaram came down heavily on Modi, saying that he was being investigated under the Indian laws and had no right to travel or stay in UK.

Rubbishing Modi’s claim that the UPA had issued a notice against him, Chidambaram explained that it is the Enforcement Directorate which can issue such a notice, not the government. Chidambaram said Modi did not answer the summons. He further clarified that Modi’s passport was canceled in 2011 at the request of the Enforcement Directorate.

Wondering as to who took the decision to issue a fresh passport to Modi, Chidambaram questioned why he wasn’t being sent back to India given that he had no passport. The former finance minister put the onus on the NDA government to answer this question.

“Who took the decision not to appeal against the Delhi HC order that restored a passport to Modi?”, questioned Chidambaram. Further, he again asked the government to release the letters that passed between them and the UK Chancellor. According to Chidambaram, these letters would answer all charges made by the ex-IPL commissioner.

“Charges made against us are laughable charges, the letters will speak for themselves. They are the best evidence,” he said.

Chidambaram attacked Sushma Swaraj for claiming she had helped Modi on humanitarian grounds, saying if she wanted to do so she could have approached the Indian High Commission. He rubbished the charge that former PM Manmohan Singh had not spoken when the matter of Modi’s passport first came to light. He also rejected Modi’s claim that the UPA hounded the ex-IPL chief.
