Over 60 lakh kids given polio drops

Hyderabad, Janaury 24: More than 60 lakh children aged below five years were administered polio drops as part of the nation-wide pulse polio vaccination drive organised in the State. Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy formally launched the vaccination programme and administered polio drops to children at his Camp Office today.

The first phase of pulse polio immunisation programme for 2011, launched today, is aimed at vaccinating about one crore children.

Speaking to reporters later, Principal Secretary for Health PV Ramesh said door-to-door visits by medical teams would be conducted on January 24 and 25 across the State to cover the children who missed the vaccination today. The visits will be held on January 27 also in cities like Hyderabad, Rajahmundry, Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam.

“Parents who could not get their children vaccinated today can approach the nearest primary or urban healthcare centres or even private hospitals to get polio drops for their children for free. They can even call toll-free number 104,” Ramesh said. The second phase of pulse polio drive will be conducted on February 27.
