Over 46,000 seats lie vacant after counselling

Hyderabad, October 12: A whopping 46,574 seats remained vacant under convener quota after the allotment of seats in various engineering and pharmacy colleges in the state on Monday.

Not more than 10,000 seats were filled at the end of second phase of web counselling giving jitters to many private engineering and pharmacy colleges even as many students continued to complain about getting seats allotted in colleges which were not marked in their options.

At the end of second phase, 39,087 engineering seats and 7,487 BPharmacy seats remained vacant as against 1.8 lakh seats available in engineering and another 12,643 seats in pharmacy colleges.

The officials said that 24,657 of 62,000 students who exercised options during the second phase of web counselling, did not join any colleges even after seat allotment.

About 1.48 lakh engineering seats and another 1,713 BPharmacy seats were filled after the first phase of counselling.

But about 52,000 candidates who were allotted seats during first phase appeared for second phase of counselling.

According to the officials, computer science engineering was the most preferred branch at the end of second phase counselling. As many as 10,040 students got admissions in CSE, while 9,275 students got admitted in Information Technology. Similarly, 7,658 candidates opted for electronics and electrical engineering, 5,510 students for electronics and communication engineering, 3,578 students in civil engineering and another 2,389 candidates in mechanical engineering.

With lukewarm response to the engineering counselling, the officials were in two minds over conducting the third phase of counselling as large number of seats fell vacant even after second phase of counselling.

However, a decision is yet to be taken on the issue.
