Over 3 lakh people attended protest march against Triple Talaq bill in Bhagalpur

Bhagalpur: Muslim women took out a massive protest march in Bhagalpur against Triple talaq Bill. Over 3 lakh men and women reportedly attended the protest march. A large number of women were present on the occasion giving the message that they won’t accept intervention in the Shariah. The march spread across 30 to 35 kms in the city. Women were holding placards having slogans against the central government for interfering into shariah. Physically disabled women also participated in the protest.

Thousands of burkha-clad women took to streets in Saharsa as well against Triple Talaq Bill. The women demanded that no changes should be made to the Muslim Personal Law. They were holding placards demanding withdrawal of triple talaq bill. Later a delegation of women also met DM and submitted memorandum to President and governor.

On the announcement of Muslim Personal Law Board, Islah-e-Mashera and Tahaffuz Shariat Committee organised a congregation at Patel Maidan. Muslim women termed the bill as the open intervention in Muslim Personal Law.

It must be noted that the ‘Muslim Women Protection of Rights on Marriage Bill’ proposed a three-year jail term for a Muslim man who divorces his wife via talaq-e-biddat (instant triple talaq). The bill has been passed by Lok Sabha is yet to be passed by Rajya Sabha to become a law. The Supreme Court has set aside instant triple talaq or talaq-e-biddat as a “manifestly arbitrary” practice.
