Over 200 Cases of Price Violations Filed

Ajman, September 12: Well over 200 complaints have been filed against the fluctuations in commodity prices in Ajman, Shaikh Sultan bin Saqr Al Nuiaimi, Director of the Ministry of Economy (MoE) office in Ajman said.

Shaikh Sultan said that the majority of the complaints were filed against greedy traders who are charging higher prices compared to the other markets.

Since the beginning of the year, three shopping centres violated rules while three other shops were shut down for manipulating consumers by regularly increasing the prices without placing price tags on the products.

“Two hundred of the filed complaints were considered commercial fraud by the traders on consumers who were offered low quality expired items. This year we are experiencing a 40 per cent increase in the number of complaints filed compared to last year.”

Shaikh Sultan noted that during the last eight months of the year, 2,120 market inspections were conducted during the morning and evening hours.

“Our market inspections are conducted all year long to ensure that consumers are offered reasonable prices while insisting on traders to clearly place price tags on the products’ labels so that consumers can clearly see the actual prices. Consumers are urged to ensure that the price tags are clearly placed on all the products offered.”

He urged buyers to abstain from buying products with no price tags.

Any consumers wishing to submit a complaint must call the consumer protection hotline or the Ministry of Economy Office in case they feel they are being manipulated by a trader who is offering higher priced commodities.
