OUTA urges Govt. not to appoint outsider as VC

Hyderabad, December 27: The Osmania University Teachers’ Association (OUTA) has appealed to the State government not to appoint a non-academician as Vice-Chancellor of the University.

Speaking to media persons here on Sunday, the OUTA president, Prof. B. Satyanarayana, said that as per the University Grants Commission guidelines, an academician alone should be appointed Vice-Chancellor of a University. Contrary to the UGC guidelines, if the government appointed a non-academician as VC in the name of law and order, the OUTA would not allow such a person to function.

Prof. Satyanarayana said that the OUTA executive was upset over the recent development in the Osmania University, which were highly disturbing and vitiating the academic atmosphere and standards. Instead of attending the office, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. T. Tirupati Rao, was discharging his duties from his private residence at Nagarjuna Nagar behind IICT. He said that the VC was conducting all officials meetings such as principals’ meetings, Deans meetings, Standing Council meetings at his residence. As a result, there was total collapse of administration in administrative and student governance. He said that the action of the VC was sending wrong signals to the student community, teaching and non-teaching staff of the University in particular and society in general. He pointed out the entire campus was peaceful and students were attending classes.

The OUTA has appealed to the Vice-Chancellor to discharge his functions from his office in the University. He also demanded that the State government probe into the change of Registrar and OSD posts of the Osmania University. He also appealed to the student community to write the examinations on time without insisting for postponing for their better career.

The OUTA vice-presidents, Prof. A. Ramulu, Prof. Niramla Baburao, and general secretary, Prof. P. Yadagiri Reddy, were also present.
