Hyderbad, November 02: Tension gripped the Osmania University campus on Monday as students making a bid to take out a rally to Gun Park were stopped by police.
A huge posse of police, including RAF were deployed to prevent students from venturing out and creating disturbance or damaging public property.
However, students still managed to storm out of the campus and attack the residence of Sanathnagar Congress MLA, Marri Shashidhar Reddy at Tarnaka. Meanwhile, Congress MP Manda Jagannadham, who came to express solidarity with arrested students, was shooed away by the students.
A section of OUJAC students hoisted black flags on the Arts College in the morning.
A section of OUJAC students took out a huge rally with black flags from the Arts College to the Martyr’s Memorial at Gun Park.
Though they broke the police cordon near OU main gate, they were blocked near the Yadaiah Chowk.
Police erected barricades and fencing to prevent students from venturing out. As students did not relent, police arrested some, forcing others to retaliate.
Students pelted stones on police and on some vehicles prompting the latter to use mild force.
They later squatted near the main gate and blocked all traffic, demanding release of all arrested.
Even as protests were going on, another section of OUJAC took out a rally towards Tarnaka.
They broke the police cordon near the Osmania University police station and rushed towards the Tarnaka flyover.
From there, a group of students forced their way to the residence of Marri Shashidhar Reddy and attacked his house.
Meanwhile, police forcibly shifted four students staging a fast since the past two days, to a hospital.
Protests continued till evening. They burnt effigies of ten ministers hailing from the region. Students from other colleges like the PG College, Secunderabad staged protests with black flags and hoisted them at junctions and on their colleges.
