OU students protest govt’s move to regularise contract staff

Mild tension prevailed on the Osmania University (OU) campus here after scores of students took out a rally and hurled stones at policemen in protest against Telangana Government’s decision to regularise the contract employees in various departments.

The protesting students, who were planning to take out a ‘Chalo Assembly’ rally from the varsity, were prevented by the police forces from marching out of the campus.

Angered over this, the protesters raised anti-government slogans, burnt effigies and hurled stones at police personnel, OU Police Station Inspector V Ashok Reddy said.

“We have registered a case of rioting against the protesters for stone pelting. No one has been arrested,” the inspector told PTI.

In a similar development, as many as 11 students and unemployed youths, were taken into preventive custody near Gun Park when they tried to gherao the Assembly premises, Saifabad Police Station Inspector P Ashok said.

“We foiled their attempt to march towards the Assembly. Eleven protesters were taken into preventive custody and later let off,” the police officer said.

The students and unemployed youths have been holding protests on the OU campus for the past several months, demanding that instead of regularising the contract varsity employees, the government should launch recruitment drive so that other aspirants can also apply.

They are also demanding formation of Telangana Public Service Commission for recruitment of government jobs. They have also sought extending the age limit for government jobs to forty years.
