Washington, May 03: US President Barack Obama probable use of the alleged killing of al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden would not be an effective campaign material in the country’s upcoming election, a political analyst says.
In an interview with Media, Jason Ditz, managing news editor at Antiwar.com pointed to some discussions suggesting Obama is trying to use bin Laden’s death to his benefit in the next US presidential election, saying, “I don’t think that it will work prominently in their actual election material.”
He argued, bin Laden’s issue “is a little bit too specific and a little bit too foreign policy and I don’t think that would play very well in the United States as a commercial.”
The political analyst further emphasized that “Various problems of the economy are well beyond the death of this man,” saying “Even if there is short term relief for the administration to point at this and call it their great success, but all those problems are still going to be there.”
Obama announced earlier on Monday that bin Laden was killed by US forces on Sunday after he was found hiding in a compound in Pakistan.
Meanwhile, a US official says bin Laden’s body has been buried at sea, alleging that his hasty burial was in accordance with Islamic law, which requires burial within 24 hours of death.
This is while burial at sea is not an Islamic practice and Islam does not determine a timeframe for burial.
Analysts are wondering why the US officials have buried bin Laden’s body at sea, since they could apply the DNA test on his corpse to confirm his death.
The announcement of bin Laden’s death comes almost ten years after the September 11 attacks on the United States. On September 11, 2001, a series of coordinated attacks were carried out in the United States, leaving almost 3,000 people dead.
During the incident, 19 reported ‘al-Qaeda terrorists’ hijacked four commercial passenger jet airliners and crashed two of them into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, killing everyone on board and many others working in the buildings.
The hijackers crashed a third airliner into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, just outside Washington, D.C.
Following the incidents, the US launched a massive military incursion into Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan and other parts of the oil-rich Middle East and Central Asia under the pretext of ‘war on terror.’
The US-led invasions of the region have killed and maimed millions of innocents and destabilized regional security.
