Oriya dies in Hyd, fuels fears of H1N1 infection

Hyderabad, August 21: The death of an Oriya youth in Hyderabad has added to the fears over spread of swine flu in Kendrapara district of Orissa, even as medical department officials in Hyderabad categorically denied any death due to swine flu.

Birendra Sah, of Kharidipatna village in Kendrapada district, who had been running a fast food shop in Hyderabad for eight years, died at a private hospital yesterday.

Sahu had swine flu-like symptoms and was admitted to the Gita Nursing Home on Monday. His condition deteriorated yesterday and was shifted to the special ward where he died, according Sahu’s widow Binodini.
Even as the chief district medical officer (CDMO) of Kendrapada Madhab Das said it was yet to be confirmed if the death was caused by swine flu, Hyderabad District Medical and Health Officer Jaya Kumari flatly denied any death due to swine flu in the twin cities.

Jaya Kumari told Express that no private hospital was authorised to admit a patient with swine flu symptoms. “Only Apollo Hospitals have started swine flu treatment at their hospital. Therefore, there is no chance of any swine flu death at any private hospital in the city,’’ she said.

Banshidhar Das, medical officer of Pattamundai Government Hospital, told this paper: “The deceased had been a diabetic for long and was also suffering from high blood pressure. He might have died due to high blood pressure in Hyderabad. We will confirm the exact cause of death after going through the death certificate and other relevant papers,’’ he said.
