Ranchi, April 07: Shops and schools were shut and vehicles stayed off the roads here Thursday after opposition parties called for a shutdown to protest the killing of a youth in police firing during a demolition drive.
Hundreds of workers of the Congress, the Jharkhand Vikas Morcha-Prajatantrik (JVM-P), and Left parties were arrested when they were enforcing the shutdown.
“The shutdown was complete. People supported us to protest the barbaric attitude of the state government,” Jharkhand Congress spokesperson Shailesh Sinha told IANS.
The demolition drive at Islamnagar here turned violent Tuesday, forcing the police to fire on protesters. One young man was killed and many others were injured.
More than 3,500 illegal structures have been demolished here in the past two weeks on the directives of the Jharkhand High Court. Opposition parties are demanding stop to the demolition drive and a rehabilitation package for those affected.
