Opposition Plans To Corner Kiran Govt

Hyderabad, December 09: The six-day winter session of the State Assembly commencing from Friday is likely to witness a lot of fire works with the Opposition, especially the Telugu Desam and the TRS, getting ready with all the ammunition to launch a verbal attack on the state government on crucial issues.

The brief session will last till December 16 though the Opposition parties at the Business Advisory Committee meeting chaired by the Deputy Speaker Mr. Nadendla Manohar today tried in vain for the session to last for 15 days. The PRP President Mr. Chiranjeevi appealed to the Deputy Speaker to consider holding the session till December 24.

The BAC meeting was attended by the Chief Minister Mr. Kiran Kumar Reddy, TDP leaders Mr. Ashok Gajapathi Raju and Mr. Muddu Krishnama Naidu, PRP Chief Mr. Chiranjeevi besides leaders of both the Left parties,TRS and the MIM. After prolonged deliberations it was decided that the Assembly would transact business for six days including on Saturday though being a government holiday. On the first day tomorrow the usual question hour has been dispensed with and the House would straight away begin its business by taking up discussion on the flood situation and the huge loss incurred by the farmers due to damage to standing crops.

The Chief Minister disclosed that the government would introduce a Bill in the House to check the illegal activities of the Micro Finance Institutions. The Home Minister would also make a statement in the House with regard to withdrawal of police cases against students in connection with the Telangana and Seemandhra agitations.

This is the first time that the Assembly session would be chaired by the Deputy Speaker as the Speaker’s post remains vacant after Mr. Kiran Kumar Reddy resigned to take the reins as Chief Minister and hence function as the Leader of the House.

Though Mr. Kiran Kumar Reddy has weathered stormy proceedings in the past as the Speaker, he would be facing the Opposition tirade as the Chief Minister now. The Telugu Desam Party is mobilizing its ammunition to corner the government mainly on the havoc caused by unprecedented rains and damage to crops in the state.

As a matter of fact the TDP leaders at a meeting in NTR Bhavan last night have chalked out a programme to unleash a tirade against the government for failing to come to the rescue of the farming community affected by the floods and thus embarrass the ruling Congress. The TDP even has decided to bring the Assembly to a standstill if need be on the issue of providing relief to the farmers on the same lines as the Parliament reeling under the impact of the 2G Spectrum scam for the past 20 days. What is more the TDP leaders decided to even stay put in the Assembly premises till the government yields to their demands.

The TRS also is planning to rain bullets at the congress government by firing with all cylinders on the tricky separate Telangana issue. The TRS

Leader Mr. E. Rajendra has even threatened to stall the proceedings of the House till the cases booked against the students in connection with the separatist agitation was not withdrawn forthwith.

Thus with the Opposition parties readying to push the government to the wall on various issues and the ruling Congress members also preparing to launch a counter offensive, the brief session of the Assembly is expected to be a stormy one and all attention will be focused on the new Chief Minister as to how he would handle the situation with the needed political sagacity. Interestingly, the treasury benches would feel the absence of a senior party leader like former Chief Minister, Mr. K. Rosaiah, being a member of the Upper House, and who during the past six years had defended the government from the TDP assault.
