Opposition demands govt to come to rescue of farmers

Hyderabad, August 10: Expressing concern over the drought-like conditions across Andhra Pradesh, the opposition parties including TDP today demanded that the Congress government come to the rescue of farmers immediately.

Seeking to mount pressure on the government over the issue, the TDP, TRS, CPI and CPI(M) joined hands at a CPI-sponsored round table and decided to step up struggles against the government.

“Large parts of the state are facing drought conditions. The government”s response has been grossly inadequate.

We demand that the government take up relief measures quickly,” senior TDP legislator D Narendra told reporters. Senior TRS leader G Vijayarama Rao said the inadequate rainfall has left standing crops dry and put the farmers in dire straits.

CPI state secretary K Narayana said protests would be organised soon at district collector offices to “wake up the government to the reality”. CPI(M) state secretary B V Raghavulu also slammed the state government for its alleged poor response to the plight of the farmers.

Monsoon has been truant in Andhra Pradesh though it entered the state much ahead of the traditional arrival in early July.
