Only good-looking men will do, say brides-to-be

Hyderabad, December 29: As if the wide disparity in the sex ratio was not enough, new matrimonial trends in the city are giving jitters to eligible bachelors.

Gone are the days when prospective brides would only be interested in the property, job profile and character of the groom. But now their first preference is something else – looks. Girls in twin cities are reportedly rejecting or accepting marriage proposals on basis of facial features and personality of the men.

Confirming this trend, T Manjushree, manager, Vasireddy Marriage bureau explains, “The girls of today are usually well-educated and have jobs. They are confident of taking care of themselves and do not compromise on their choices. In fact they have become more demanding than men and only want the best.” She adds, “There is a demand for men with fair skin tone or good looks. Though even other factors are considered, this one tops the list.” Others blame this trend on rapid urbanisation which has cast its influence on the city-bred. “It is only the city girls who are on the lookout for good-looking men while considering marriage proposals. The scene is completely different among the rural population. In smaller cities and towns, people still are bothered only about character and jobs,” says G Krishna, manager, Kakatiya Marriage Consultancy. He adds, “Girls today are more beauty conscious.

They want someone who will make a good pair with them rather than make them look odd. If the girl is beautiful, then their demands sometimes get unreasonable.” Quoting a recent instance, P Tilak, owner, Srisai Marriage bureau in Himayathnagar narrates, “Initially a girl liked the photo of the prospective groom as he was good looking in it. But when she actually met him, he turned out to be average looking and dark compared to the photo. The girl did not even think twice before rejecting the match.” He feels city-bred girls are very influenced by movies and fashion.

“Though rare, I do get requests from girls asking me if I have any match who would look similar to their favourite heroes.”
