Three to five cases of violence against women are being registered in the Hyderabad district every day, according to complaints received on a website launched by the Women Development and Child Welfare Agency (WDCWA).
Women living in rural and urban areas are facing multiple forms of violence including sexual violence, domestic abuse, other forms of violence like burning and disfiguring through acids, honour killings, custodial abuse and torture and dowry-related violence.
“We launched the online complaint facility under the Domestic Violence Act,” said K Rajyalakshmi, WDCWA project director. According to National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) records, Andhra Pradesh has the worst record of crimes against women with 24,738 cases, including 613 dowry deaths and 1,070 rape cases in 2007-2008. The city recorded 1,931 crimes against women, making it the most unsafe city after Delhi. In 2008-09, the state recorded 930 rape cases and 345 dowry deaths. In addition, there are up to 12,000 domestic violence cases annually.
Rajyalakshmi said that 1,144 cases had been registered last year. Of these, 100 cases were settled while 212 cases were withdrawn and 845 cases transferred to courts for hearing. Besides, the WDCWA was also accepting complaints from anganwadi centres, which were helping domestic violence victims. Rajyalakshmi said they had constituted teams with the help of NGOs, ICDS staff and other departments to create awareness among women. They had also trained some anganwadi workers as paralegal volunteers in coordination with the District Legal Services Authority (DSLA). All anganwadi workers were asked to include the Act on their agenda for mothers’ meetings.
Previous data of registered police cases would be available on the website. The portal provides important information like police contacts, courts, Human Rights Commission, Hyderabad collector and shelter homes.
