Online comment on harmful or provocative matter can land you in trouble

Social media sites such as face book, twitter and YouTube have become the most preferred platforms for public especially youth to discuss matters with each other and to express their opinion regarding any information. These days the alleged hate speech of Majlis MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi has become the talk of the town and much has been said in this regard.

As per section 66(a) of Information Technology Act commenting online upon harmful or provocative matter shall be punishable with imprisonment for a term which may extend to three years and with fine. It is also punishable under 153 (a) of Indian Penal Code (IPC) for promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc., and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony.
