Kannur, August 26: One more person was arrested today in connection with the recent Rs 4.54 crore bank heist in neighbouring Kasaragod District.
Haneefa (38), part of the seven-member gang involved in the June 18 burglary of the North Malabar Gramin Bank’s Periye branch, was arrested here, Kanhangad DySP Habeeb Rahman said.
Rahman, incharge of investigations into the case, said police were expecting to arrest other gang members shortly.
The gang had struck at bank and decamped with pledged gold jewels weighing 33 KG worth about Rs 4.47 crore and cash to the tune of 6.74 lakhs.
The kingpin of the gang, Krishnamurthy (26), a native of Tamil Nadu, was arrested on August 22 based on clues from small time gold merchants with whom he had established contacts to dispose of the stollen jewels.
Haneefa of Muzhappilangad confessed that Krishnamurthy had given him 3,500 grams of stolen gold jewels. Police was in the process of recovering the ornaments.
