Hyderabad, March 05: A one-month-old baby girl and two others were critically injured after a fire broke out in a house at Malakpet.
The fire broke out when a can of petrol, which the family had stored to sell, accidently spilled on a burning lamp, police said.
According to police, the mishap took place in the house of 48-year Champa Pawar, who also runs a kirana store in her house at Shalivahana Nagar in Malakpet.
Champa’s 25-year-old daughter Bhatti Leela gave birth to a baby girl Divya, a month ago. Leela, who stays in Rajasthan with her husband, had come to her mother’s house for delivery.
Malakpet police sub-inspector M Venkateshwar Goud said Champa brought 10 litres of petrol to sell in loose in the kirana store during the recent bandh. She had stored it in her house as all of it did not get sold.
“Today, the petrol can accidentally fell and the fuel spilled on a lamp that was lit. The flames spread to the hall and bed room where Divya was asleep. Champa and Leela also got trapped in the flames and suffered severe burns,” Venkateshwar Goud said.
Alerted by neighbours, a fire tender reached the place and doused the flames within a hour and shifted the severely injured family members to a nearby private hospital.
Champa and Divya suffered 90 per cent burns while Leela suffered 65 per cent burns. As the condition of Champa and Divya worsened, they were shifted to the Osmania General Hospital in the afternoon.
