London, March 08: More than one million people both those fleeing Libya and those remaining inside the country are in need of urgent humanitarian aid, the United Nations says.
Libyan people are in a very catastrophic situation because they are injured, dying and require immediate help, the UN aid coordinator, Valerie Amos, said while visiting the areas in Tunisia along the Libyan border.
“Need is urgent in the town of Misratah where residents have been attacked by government forces at the weekend,” Amos added.
According to the UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, the money is needed to help an estimated 400,000 people fleeing Libya, including 200,000 who have already left the crisis-hit country.
“It will also cover another 600,000 people inside the country, though that figure only includes opposition controlled areas,” the UN official added.
The United Nations is now seeking $160 million in urgent financial support to help refugees and Libyan nationals. The money is scheduled to be spend on camp management, food security, nutrition, healthcare, water, sanitation and hygiene.
The UN is effectively frozen out of sections controlled by forces loyal to Libya’s long-time ruler Muammar Gaddafi.
