One held for stealing diamonds, cash

Mumbai, August 10: In a case in which a complainant turned out to be the culprit, police have arrested a diamond agent for allegedly decamping with diamonds and cash belonging to merchants, police said here today.

The accused identified as Mansukh Seledia (47), a resident of suburban Dahisar, has been arrested yesterday after police probe revealed that he fabricated the story to steal the valuables, they added.

Seledia was in need of money as he suffered lose of Rs 10 lakh in the share market, police said.

According to the police, the accused Seledai, who had been admitted to a nearby hospital with injuries on his body on August 3, told police that four persons posing as a CID officials robbed him of diamonds worth Rs 18 lakh and cash of Rs 1.80 lakh near Villa View building at Opera House in south Mumbai.

“He told us that he was on his way to deliver the cash and diamonds to merchants dealing in gold when he was robbed.

But the story is false. Nothing such had happened,” Deputy Police Commissioner Sanjay Mohite said.

“The probe has revealed that he was misguiding us and did not co-operate with the police,” he added. “Medical tests at police hospital have also stated that the injuries he received were self-inflicted in nature. He injured himself with a knife.
