One held in Hyderabad for cheating NRI

HYDERABAD: A 30-year-old man was on Thursday arrested for allegedly cheating an NRI of over Rs 9 lakh by fraudulently using his international credit card for buying a car and gold ornaments.

Cyber crime wing of Hyderabad Police arrested K Nageswara Rao, a native of Guntur district in Andhra Pradesh, who is presently staying here, police said.

In the first week of March, a friend of Rao, identified as Ananth Bhaskar, met and told him he has an international credit card. Bhaskar told Rao if he uses the card he will give him commission.

Accordingly, the duo went to a showroom in Begumpet here and swiped the card and purchased a car for Rs 7.65 lakh. They used the card to buy two gold chains worth Rs 1.38 lakh, a police release said.

When the original card user came to know about the fraudulent transactions, he raised the issue with the card issuing bank based in US.

The US bank, in turn, brought the matter to the notice of a private bank in the city. An official of the private bank yesterday approached the police over misuse of the card.

A case was registered and during investigation, police arrested Rao.

Police seized the brand new car purchased with the credit card from Rao’s possession. The gold chains were taken away by Bhaskar for whom police have launched a search, the release added.
