Algiers, July 12: Algeria remains the most populous nation in the Maghreb with 35.6 million inhabitants, with more than one in four being under the age of 15, its national statistical bureau said Saturday.
Estimating figures as of January 1, it said the fact that 28.2 percent of Algerians were under 15, and 10 percent of them under the age of five, “testifies to a recent increase in the birth rate”.
Some 64.4 percent fall in the working-age category of 15 to 59 years of age, with 7.4 percent over 60, while life expectancy stands at 74.7 years for men and 76.3 years for women.
Algeria’s last national census in April 2008 put the total population at 34.8 million.
