Once a place for richie rich, Race course to turn habitat for poor

Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao on Friday said that the 100-acre land of Race Course in Malakpet will be use for housing of the weaker section and the race course would be shifted away from city.

“It will be no loss to them. It does not matter to the rich even if they have to travel 50 km away, but construction of houses there will make a difference to thousands of poor,” he said at a meeting in NBT Nagar of Khairatabad constituency where he lashed out at successive governments, primarily the Congress, for neglecting the poor.

The distribution of ‘pattas’ began on Friday will continue for a week till 1.25 lakh beneficiaries get their property documents. Mr. Rao set the ball rolling on his ambitious programme of giving out a whopping 1.25 lakh ‘pattas’ by participating in two programmes – in Malkajgiri constituency in the morning and the other in Khairatabad in the evening.

It was a dream that came true for a lakh of poor people living under thatched or semi-permanent dwellings in slums under the GHMC limits for decades when their structures and the land on which they lived for decades was regularized.
