Omar Abdullah meets Manmohan, Sonia

New Delhi, August 04: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday held a series of meetings with central leaders including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi.

During his meeting with the Prime Minister, Mr. Omar requested for setting up of two Central universities in Jammu as well as Kashmir as this would tackle the education issues in the state.

Mr. Omar was accompanied by cabinet colleagues including Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand. State Congress President Saif-ud-din Soz was also present in the meeting.

Earlier, Mr. Omar met Congress President Sonia Gandhi in the Parliament where he thanked her for “wholehearted support” to the coalition in the state which included in particular the “record” allocations for Jammu and Kashmir by the Planning Commission.

“The record support Jammu and Kashmir had received from the Planning Commission would not have been possible without her support,” Mr. Omar said.

The meetings comes three days after Governor N N Vohra rejected Mr. Omar’s resignation in the wake of PDP’s allegation that the chief minister was involved in the 2006 sex scandal in the state, a charge rubbished by the Centre.

The Chief Minister had earlier met HRD Minister Kapil Sibal, Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar and Union Renewable Minister Farooq Abdullah.
