Old historical names of localities, tempered

Hyderabad, December 17: Athapur means an area donated by someone. Some miscreants of our city are writing it as Attapur. It is a densely populated area where colonies and flats are being constructed very rapidly but not a single house or flat is being given to the Muslims.

Athapur area has a history of its own. In 1674, during the reign of Qutub Shahi Dynasty, Athapur was donated (Athiya) as “Jagir” and it is the origin of its name. There is a grand and spacious mosque in this area which is famous for its architectural beauty. Under this mosque an area of 7 acres and 10 Guntas was also made Wakf, but some communal elements have usurped this area. Facing its mosque, there is Mishk Mahal (Palace).

The historical treatises show that there used to be an Islamic school. Till very recently an Urdu Medium School was functioning here. Mishk Mahal Palace is registered as Wakf property which is still in good condition. It has 5 acres of Wakf land under its jurisdiction which is under the possession of a non-Musim land grabber. Mishk Mahal Palace was constructed by pious Muslim called Miyan Mishk.
