We have heard that it’s always the groom’s side that throws tantrums, threatening to call off a wedding at the last moment for minor reasons.
But, a bride here walked out a marriage right before ‘jaimaal’ in UP’s Fatehpur district as she felt the groom appeared older to her.
The girl, age 19-years refuse to marry “elderly groom”, who was 39 years old and did not take a softer line from her stand even after repeated persuasion by her parents, relatives and some villagers tried to convince her.
The marriage was fixed by the girl’s parents who reportedly did not told the bride about the groom’s age and even after the ‘barat’ reached the spot, they hid all details from their daughter.
“Till the time ‘barat’ reached Gauspur village, everything was normal. As the girl was about to garland the bridegroom during ‘Jaimal’ ceremony, she noticed major difference between her and the groom’s age.
“Angry, she immediately got up from the ‘mandap’ and confronted her would-be in-laws. Thereafter, the girl told her parents and other family members that she could not marry him because of his age,” said a villager.
“After sticking to her stand, a ‘panchayat’ was immediately called at the marriage venue and they also asked the bride to proceed with the rituals.
“Despite this, the girl made it clear that she cannot marry him at any cost,” the village sources added.
Later, members from both the sides genially come to a decision and agreed to return gifts exchanged during ‘Tilak’ ceremony and pay back money incurred as expenses by the girl’s family.
Thereafter, the ‘baraat’ had to return without the bride.
“The matter was amicably resolved. Nobody from the groom or bride’s side has lodged any complaint, no case has been registered in this regard,” said SHO Kalyanpur Gurmukh Singh.
