Old City streets to have LEDs

All lamppost and median lighting on the main roads of the old city are to be substitute with light-emitting diodes (or LEDs), said Hyderabad Mayor Mohammed Majid Hussain.

Mayor Majid Hussain looks enthusiastic to take up this project before his term expires in November.

On Wednesday, the Standing Committee of the GHMC approved the proposal for improvement of illumination levels in all the Greater Hyderabad city roads, by replacing existing fixtures with LEDs.

The old city has 50 civic wards. At some stretches in these wards, the streetlights are either not functioning or they have been robbed or broken.

GHMC is burdened with huge electricity bills, to the tune of crores every month, the Mayor said.

Power consumption will be reduced by at least 20 to 30 per cent with the installation of theseLEDs.

The municipal corporation can use the few crores of same money which is saved for other development works in the city.
