Observe Roza, but with caution

Kanpur, August 13: Muslims who are diabetic and have heart problems planning to observe fast during Ramzan need to be extra cautious as little carelessness on their part can take a toll on their health, doctors said.

Patients of Type 1 diabetes should refrain from keeping “roza” (fast) as they need insulin to maintain sugar level of their body, Professor Sushil Gupta of Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI), Lucknow said.

He said those suffering from Type 2 diabetes should take simple food alongwith their medicine in morning and during “iftaar” (evening feast).

Adequate rest should be taken in case of weakness or tiredness, he said, adding during Ramzan intake of food items which are high in cholesterol are eaten therefore, heart patients need to exercise caution with their eating habits.

Diabetic and heart patients should avoid rich food completely, as it increases the blood pressure and sugar level of the body, Professor Sushil Kumar Cardiology department at SGPGI said.

These patients should frequently undergo checkup and consult their doctor he added.
