Obituary: Professor Tutun Mukherjee

The University of Hyderabad experienced a loss today as its well-respected and prolific academic, Tutun Mukherjee, recently died. Born on November 17, 1952, earned a BA – Honours from Patna University in 1974 and MA English from the same University. Five years later, she did her MPhil at Osmania University and received her PhD from there as well.

After teaching at OU, she joined HCU as a Professor of Comparative Literature. She was the head of the Centre for Women’s Studies and Theatre. Here specific research interests include Literatures of world literature, comparative literature, women’ writing, translation, theatre, and film studies. Here academic publishing repertoire includes articles in prestigious journals. Some of these articles include How Fares the Well? A Study of the Interstices of the Welfare State: Bharati Sarabhai’s The Well of the People (1943), Mahawsweta Devi’s Jal/ Water (1976), and Vinodini Daaham/Thirst (2005) and Sites of Desire: Chandrapore, Mayapore, Jummarpur: Race, Sex and Law in Colonial India.”

Before she retired in late 2016, she also supervised many budding student scholars who went onto earn their PhD from the prestigious institution.
