Obama taps Kennard as EU ambassador

Washington, August 08: US President Barack Obama has nominated former top communications watchdog William Kennard to become the US representative to the European Union.

Kennard is currently a managing director at The Carlyle Group, a global private equity firm, and sits on the board of The New York Times Company, which publishes the influential daily.

He was previously Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission.

If confirmed by the Senate he will replace Kristen Silverberg, who was nominated by then president George W Bush in April last year, and who stepped down in January.

The White House also tapped former fundraiser Alan Solomont to become ambassador to Spain and Andorra.

“I am grateful that such distinguished and capable individuals have chosen to serve in my administration at this crucial moment in our nation’s history,” Obama said in a statement.

The White House today announced it would also nominate Barry B White as ambassador to Norway.
