Washington, November 08: United States President Barack Obama has urged lawmakers from both Democrat and Republican parties, to approve a package of tax credits for businesses that hire military veterans.
Obama announced a new “veterans’ gold card” program in which former US military personnel can receive customized job search at career centers, The Washington Post reported.
This week, the US Senate is expected to consider tax credits for businesses that hire unemployed veterans or injured vets who have been out of work.
The action is part of the larger effort by the White House to convince congressional Republicans to approve Obama’s jobs legislation.
So far, none of the Republicans in Senate have voted in favor of Obama’s jobs plan, because it is paid for by levying more taxes on wealthier Americans.
The US Labor Department estimates that about 12 percent of veterans who served in the military since 9/11 are unemployed, higher than the national average of 9 percent.
