Obama awaiting report on Flight 253 incident

Washington, January, 01: The US Department of Homeland Security is preparing a report on the plot to blow up a Northwest Airlines plane on Christmas Day.

A reevaluation and recommendations on US national intelligence policies and practices will also be included in the report, which is to be delivered to President Barack Obama.

Obama has asked why Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the 23-year-old Nigerian who attempted to detonate an explosive device on Northwest Flight 253, was not monitored and detained by intelligence and security officials before he boarded the flight to Detroit, Michigan in Amsterdam.

Abdulmutallab’s father had recently contacted the US Embassy in Nigeria, warning that his son might have become radicalized.

“Had this critical information been shared, it could have been compiled with other intelligence, and a fuller, clearer picture of the suspect would have emerged,” Obama said. “The warning signs would have triggered red flags, and the suspect would have never been allowed to board that plane for America.”

Obama called the situation “totally unacceptable” during a press conference on Tuesday and has told US intelligence agencies to make changes.

“There were bits of information available within the intelligence community that could have — and should have — been pieced together,” Obama said earlier this week.
