Nurses attempt C-section on doctor’s instruction over phone, baby dies

Bhubaneswar: In an attempt of delivering the baby three idiots’ style, nurses of a hospital in Odisha conducted a c-section while they were given instructions by a doctor over the phone. The surgery went horribly and the baby died. Moreover, the uterus of the woman also got damaged.

The incident took place in Sai Hospital, a private hospital in Kendrapada district of Odisha.
Aarti Samal was admitted to the hospital in presence of her husband Kalpatru Samal, reported India Today.

Dr Rashmikant Patra was supposed to be present in Aarti’s case, but he was absent. So, the nurses operated the woman while coordinating with the doctor over the phone.

Aarti’s husband Kalpatru took the body of his baby to the Kendrapada Town police station and filed an FIR against the doctor.

He said, “When we contacted Dr Rashmikant Patra, he asked us to get her admitted to the hospital. He informed us that he is not present in the hospital but will coordinate with the nurses for proper care once we get her admitted to the hospital. He did not arrive even when the condition of my wife got critical. I don’t know who did it but my wife was operated upon and we lost our first baby. My wife’s uterus is also damaged. The nurses said that they had coordinated with the doctor over the phone and had given their 100 percent. It is only because of their negligence of the hospital authority.”

Police are investigating the matter and a case of negligence has been filed against the doctor.
“We will ask a team of doctors to see the damage caused and the actual reason of the baby’s death,” said IIC Bijay Kumar Disi, from Town Thana, Kendrapada.
