Hours after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had to face a protest over the nun gang-rape case, Trinamool Congress leader Derek O’Brien on Monday said this is not a community issue and urged all to bring an end to the communal violence.
O’Brien said that he raised the issue of gang-rape of a 72-year-old nun in West Bengal’s Nadia district in the Parliament today.
“This is not a Christian issue or a minority issue. This is not a woman issue – it is a man’s issue as well. We are with you. Every single Parliamentarian is with you. We live in an India that is a beautiful, united India, not in a divisive India. This is the India I know and this is the India we will strive to protect,” he said while speaking at a prayer meeting in the national capital.
“This is not a community issue. I appeal to every one of you who has had the privilege of going to a Christian missionary school – millions of Indians have – for god’s sake, please respect the schools,” he added.
Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has reiterated that strongest possible action would be initiated against the guilty involved in the gang-rape of a nun.
Banerjee, who visited Nadia district this evening to take stock of the situation, also had a meeting with the school authority, district administration and the representative of the local church.
Earlier on Saturday, around a dozen suspected dacoits entered the Convent of Jesus and Mary and gang-raped the nun.
Eight people have so far been detained in connection with the case after police officials released CCTV footage of the perpetrators. (ANI)
