Number of diabetic patients in India may go up

Hyderabad, March 10: By 2025 India might become the diabetic capital of the world. Making the situation more complex, most of persons suffering from diabetes will also be affected with kidney failure, if they do not take corrective measures.

The members of Indian Society of Organ Transplantation (ISOT) during a press conference said that presently there are 40 million diabetic patients in India and by 2025 it is estimated to go up to 79 million. Former president of Diabetic Association of India Dr BK Sahay said that Indians are genetically prone to diabetics especially because of their lifestyle – lack of physical fitness and junk food. One of the major health problems a diabetic patient is prone to is failure of kidney if he fails to control his sugar levels,’’ Sahay said.

He said that in most of the cases people realise that they are diabetics very late. “The symptoms of diabetics are excessive urination, thirst, fatigue, loss of weight, visual disturbance,’’ Sahay said.
Indian Society of Organ Transplantation president A Gopal Kishan said that health problems like diabetics and kidney failure can be avoided by keeping fit and active, regular control of sugar levels, monitoring blood pressure, eating healthy food besides keeping the weight under control.
“If the problem of diabetics is neglected the patient will suffer with kidney failure.

Presently the kidney transplantation or its associated treatments are so expensive even rich people find it difficult to afford. So people should make sure they keep their sugar levels under control to avoid kidney problems,’’ Gopal Kishan said.

For the benefit of people, ISOT will conduct free medical tests, which includes sugar, kidney and other tests on March 12 at Saibaba temple in Chaderghat between 8.30 a.m and 2 p.m.
