Secretary for Ministry of Urban Development Sudhir Krishna today said the National Urban Infomation System (NUIS) will provide maps containing thematic database to urban local bodies to enable them to develop or redesign their master plans. Participating at a one-day national workshop on ‘NUIS Scheme with Special Emphasis on Bhuvan’ organised by National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) here , Mr Krishna said that NRSC has come out with thematic databases of twelve primary layers like urban and land use, forest, twon companies and settlements location. He said 7,935 small towns and cities in the country would be covered under the database, for the planned development, including storm water, irrigation, sewerage lines, water supply, solid waste management, road improvement and urban transport system. Apart from this, he said that the database would be useful in the rural and urban planning and in identifying forest land and open land for better utilization. “This pilot project is adopted in 152 cities and town including Adilabad, Dharmavaram, Madanapalli, Nalgonda, Srikakulam, and Tadepalligudem of Andhra Pradesh,” he said. Stating that the government was conducting the study with the assistance of World Bank, Mr.Krishna said that the small towns could not be covered under the study due to the paucity of funds. The NUIS would also provide funds for satellite survey with the collaboration of Town and Country Planning Organisation, Survey of India and National Remote Sensing Agency(NRSA), he added. UNI
