Hyderabad, July 04: Guess where the elite National Security Guard (NSG) commandos are conducting their daily morning exercises?
The perimeter abutting the 2-km long Begumpet airport runway near Bowenpally side has now turned out to be a suitable place for them to conduct jogging and other exercises. Airports Authority of India (AAI) has already accorded permission to the NSG in this regard.
Apart from this area, commandos are using Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) building located adjacent to the runway and makeshift tents are also put up on the premises for the convenience of commandos. The perimeter is actually meant for officials of the AAI and their vehicles to inspect the runway at regular intervals.
“We will continue to use this place till the completion of construction work at Trimulgherry centre. Moreover, the perimeter is convenient for us to conduct daily exercises,” explained NSG officials. The regional hub has 241 trained commandos on the alert at all times, to handle terror situations. The Central government has decided to establish regional hubs at Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad and Kolkata to enhance the reach and capacity to handle terrorist attacks across the country.
The Trimulgherry centre will be operational fully by next year. Construction work of separate blocks for officers and guards, rooms for storing weaponry and other training facilities was given to the National Building Construction Corporation (NBCC), New Delhi. Facilities available at various military establishments in Secunderabad and Greyhounds Training Centre in Rajendranagar are also being utilised for now to develop special skills, officials explained.
After shifting commercial operations to Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Shamshabad last year, industrialists and politicians are increasingly using the Begumpet airport as a base to fly to different parts of the country in private jets and helicopters.
