Mumbai, January 07: Trusting her cousin proved to be a very costly affair for Aparna Verma, 43, a non-resident India who runs a school in Dubai. She recently filed a complaint with the police, alleging that her cousin, Dilip Kanal, 62, and his son, Gaurav, 30 — residents of Atur Apartment in Colaba — duped her of crores.
“We arrested the father-son duo on December 28. After seven days in police custody, they have now been sent to judicial custody,” an MRA Marg police station official said.
Verma, who had an interest in properties in and around Mumbai, had trusted her cousin to do the dealings on her behalf. Police said that Dilip had been managing her real estate business for the past 12 years. Verma had made him the director of her company, Alice Infrastructure Private Limited. She had also given him a 0.2% stake in every deal, and also a power of attorney.
In her complaint to the police, Verma said that Dilip had suggested her to invest in a profitable property in Panvel worth Rs300 crore. “We took a loan of Rs 12.28 crore from the Punjab National Bank, and he withdrew Rs3 crore at the initial stages of the deal from my account,” Verma said.
Later, he allegedly forged the bank documents and changed the name of Verma’s company to get the remaining loan amount transferred in his name.
