Lidhiana, July 18: A non-resident Indian, Bachittar Singh, ended his life over a property dispute with his sister and brother-in-law, at Daonmajra village near Kharar on Friday, Station House Officer (SHO) Sub-Inspector Dalbeer Singh said.
Bachittar, who was in his late 30s and had recently returned from Dubai, was found dead on the roadside around 1.30 pm. As the police were taking the body to the Civil Hospital, a suicide note was recovered, wherein the deceased had held his sister Gurmeet Kaur and brother-in-law Jagjeet Singh responsible for forcing him to take the extreme step.
The SHO said that the suicide note read that his sister and brother-in-law were denying him the right over his house and other property, following which the NRI ended his life.
Preliminary police investigations revealed that the deceased was a native of Khizrabad village near Kharar and was married recently before immigrating to Dubai.
On his return, the deceased was shocked to find his house and other property under possession of his sister and brother-in-law, following which he had shifted to his in-laws’ house in Nangal, the police officer said.
On the basis of the suicide note, a case under Section 306 (abetment to suicide) and 34 (common intention) of the IPC was lodged against the couple. However, no arrests were made as yet.
An autopsy will be conducted on Saturday to establish the cause of death. It is suspected that the deceased had consumed some poison, added the SHO.
