NREGS workers donate day’s wages for marriage

Anantapur, June 26: In a humane gesture, 206 NREGS workers have performed the marriage of a poor woman, by contributing their one day’s wages at Chiguturpi in Gudibanda mandal.

According to the villagers, Manjula, who is an NREGS worker, lost her parents Kadirappa and Lingamma. Following the death of her father Kadirappa three months ago, she was living at her relatives’ house. Her relatives decided to perform the marriage of Manjula with Lingappa of PC Varam village in Amarapuram mandal, who is also an NREGS worker. But bearing the wedding costs became a heavy burden to her relatives. Having learnt about the marriage proposal, 206 NREGS workers came forward to bear the wedding costs. They contributed their one day’s wages and performed the marriage of Manjula with Lingappa at Chiguturpi on June 18 and 19 spending a total amount of Rs 20,600. Agriculture minister N Raghuveera Reddy, MLA Sudhakar and MLC Tippeswamy who attended the marriage, lauded the humane gesture of NREGS workers.

At a mass Aksharabhyasam held in the village today as part of Badi Baata programme, district collector B Janardhana Reddy, DWMA project director L Murali and Rajiv Vidya Mission project officer Ramachandra Reddy, MPTCs, ZPTCs and village sarpanch blessed the newlywed couple.
