Claiming that the NRC in Assam violates Citizenship Act 1955, Faizan Mustafa, vice-chancellor of the NALSAR University of Law, in an interview with Karan Thapar argues that India’s concept of citizenship has been restricted and undermined, and we have ended up treating citizens unequally. Elaborating it further he says we now have different criteria for who is a citizen in Assam (under the NRC) and in the rest of the country.
Mr Mustafa also asserted that the NRC conducted in Assam is unconstitutional. In this video, he also explains the major legal problems with how the National Register of Citizens was conducted in Assam.
Mr Mustafa says NRC has damaged our international reputation as a civilized nation. ‘The whole idea of NRC is a flawed idea’. he added.
Mr Mustafa concludes that NRC will lead to the civil death of our own citizens.
