NRC: SC paves way to prove citizenship

New Delhi: In a major relief to the residents of Assam who had failed to prove their citizenship, the Supreme Court on Wednesday, The Supreme Court on Wednesday deferred till further orders the commencement of the process of receiving claims and objections for the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam and sought the Centre’s response on the suggestion that any one of the 10 documents can be used by claimants to prove legacy.

Supreme Court has sought the opinion of Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind and AAMSO and other parties before its judgment.

President Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind Maulana Syed Arshad Madani has expressed hope that the 40 lakh people who lost citizenship will get justice. 2-member bench of senior justice Ranjan Gogoi and justice F Nariman heard the case in which senior advocate Kapil Sibal and senior advocate Salman Khurshid appeared for Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind and AAMSO.
