NEW DELHI: Family members of the country’s former President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed are among the 40 lakh people who names have not been included in the final draft list of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) released on Monday (July 30), published by the Assam government on Monday, News18 reported on Tuesday.
A day after the NRC list was released, Ziauddin Ali Ahmed, the son of the former president’s brother Lt Ekramuddin Ali Ahmed, told media persons of his name missing in the list.
“I am the nephew of former President of India Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed, and my name is missing in the NRC since my father’s name is not in the legacy data,” News 18 quoted Ziauddin Ali Ahmed as saying. “We are [a] little worried about it.” From 1974 to 1977, Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed was the country’s fifth president. The family hails from Rangiya town of Kamrup district in Assam.
The West Bengal Chief Minister, who is in the capital city expressed shocked and said, “I am surprised to see that the names of our former President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed’s family members are not on the NRC Assam list. What else can I say? There are so many people whose names are not there,” she said.

She said that said it is an attempt to make people refugees in their homeland. “People are being isolated through a game plan. We are worried because people are being made refugees in their own country. Its a plan to throw out Bengali speaking people and Biharis. Consequences will be felt in our state also,” Banerjee said at a press conference.
While demanding amendment, she said, “Where will the 40 lakh people whose names have been deleted go? Does Centre have any rehabilitation program for them? Ultimately it is Bengal which will suffer. Its just a vote bank politics by the BJP.”
Two crore eighty-nine lakhs, eighty-three thousand six hundred and seventy-seven people have been found eligible to be included in the NRC list, according to State NRC Coordinator.
Names of 40,07,708 (40 lakh or 4 million) have been left out in the complete draft Assam NRC list.
