Now, trouble for cheerleaders

Mumbai, April 25: The city, whose film industry has patented the shake-and-grind routine of “item numbers”, has now given beleaguered IPL organisers a new cause for worry.

Navi Mumbai cops have registered an obscenity complaint against cheerleaders for their shake-and-grind act, wearing “minimal” clothing, during the first IPL semi-final held at the D Y Patil Stadium earlier this week.

A senior official said that after the complaint was registered, the cheerleaders were seen in “proper clothes” during the second semi-final.

Officials said they registered the complaint as the cheerleaders’ clothes “appeared to be obscene”. Cops have also registered a complaint against IPL officials for noise pollution after loudspeakers were used beyond the prescribed time limit. “We warned the organisers for the cheerleaders’ obscene dance routine. That was why they appeared in proper clothes during the last semi-final,” an official said.

No immediate action beyond registering complaints was taken in either of the “offences”—the alleged obscenity and noise pollution cases—as they happened in front of the seniormost police officials but not one of them spoke to their subordinates about either “offence”, an officer said.

“There is a court guideline on the use of loudspeakers and cops should have seized the instruments immediately after the deadline. However, nothing was done. Registering of cases was a mere formality,” he added.

Navi Mumbai police commissioner Gulabrao Pol was not available for comment.
